The scene
Typography Workshop · Print slipsThe original master for a typeface has disappeared. A slip on the table carries the code of the drawer where it was stored. The system prints these slips with a small puzzle to practise careful reading.
There are three private drawers. Their numbers do not match the digits visible on the slip. The manual explains the complete transformation and lets you recover the code without blindly trying combinations.
What we know for certain
One of these people stored the master in their own drawer. There were no loans or accomplices. The slip corresponds to that operation; the manual and drawer assignments are reliable. Codes always contain three digits and retain leading zeros.

01The first change
The system moves the final digit of the code to the front. For example, 123 first becomes 312.
02The second change
It then adds one to each digit separately. A 9 becomes 0, with nothing carried into a neighbouring digit. The example 312 ends up as 423.
03The preserved slip
The only code printed on the master’s slip is 385. The paper is correctly oriented and no digit is missing.
04The three drawers
The register links Judit to 274, Kai to 742 and Lola to 427. The codes remained fixed throughout the day.
05Personal access
Each drawer was opened only with its owner’s card. The master was not removed again after being stored.
