The scene
An illustrator’s homeAn illustrator lets three visitors take a sheet from his sketchbook as a souvenir. He only forbids them to take page 20: it contains the original drawing of a lighthouse.
Each visitor puts a sheet in their folder. Afterwards, they discover that the lighthouse is missing too. Nobody has left the house yet.
What we know for certain
One of these people took the reserved page. Each removed one complete sheet, without separating its faces or exchanging it. The numbering was consecutive and no sheets were missing beforehand.
The three accounts
Abril Costa
Illustration student«I chose the clouds on page 18.»
Bernat León
Editor«I took the harbour on page 19.»
Candela Gil
Neighbour«I preferred the boats on page 21.»
Examine the evidence
0 of 5 openedOpening these five clues does not cost points.
01How it was numbered
The first sheet had page 1 on the front and page 2 on the back; the second had pages 3 and 4, and so on. The covers were not numbered.
02One sheet, two faces
The paper had no layers glued together. Removing a sheet took both its pages; a single face could not be torn out separately.
03The farewell photograph
A photograph shows the original numbers on the selected sheets: Abril holds 18, Bernat 19 and Candela 21.
04The reserved lighthouse
An earlier photograph confirms that the lighthouse was on page 20. There was no other copy in the sketchbook.
05No loose sheets
No removed sheets remain on the table. Each visitor still has the single sheet shown in their photograph.
