Three volunteers made different withdrawals, claiming expenses. Two supplied valid receipts; the third withdrawal was for an invented expense. The records let you calculate which amount is missing.
What we know for certain
One of the three people withdrew money for a false expense. The other two withdrawals were legitimate and have authentic receipts. There were no unrecorded sales, losses, mistakes giving change or other withdrawals. Every amount is exact.

01The starting point
The cashbox started with thirty euros and received exactly forty euros from sales. Before expenses, it should therefore have contained seventy.
02Verified expenses
The genuine receipts total twelve euros. The shop confirms that this is the entire amount actually spent by the association.
03Closing the cashbox
The final count comes to fifty-two euros, including coins and notes. Two people repeated the count with the same result.
04The three withdrawals
Joan recorded a four-euro withdrawal, Marta six euros and Hamid eight euros. Each person withdrew only that amount.
05The invented expense
The money for the false expense left the cashbox but was not paid to any supplier. The other twelve euros were genuinely spent and are not among the money counted at closing.
